How Are Chairs Packed and Shipped for Export? A Complete Guide to Sea-Freight Protection and Case Dimensions

From knockdown packaging to wooden-case reinforcement, moisture- and impact-protection, plus case-dimension calculation, freight and arrival inspection - step by step through the sea-freight journey of export seating.

1. Packing Decides Arrival Condition

Products with metal parts and soft surfaces like chairs travel far and get handled many times in export, so packing is the first line of protection. Common methods: whole-unit packing (finished product packed directly), carton packing (multiple units per carton/wooden case), and KD (Knock-Down, disassembled flat-packed to greatly reduce volume and freight).

2. Key Damage-Prevention Points

1. Wrap each part in bubble wrap/PE bags to avoid paint scratching. 2. Rust protection for metal: apply anti-rust oil and desiccants when needed. 3. Add corner guards to soft/fabric parts to prevent crushing. 4. Wooden cases get bottom rails and pallets for forklifts. 5. Strengthen cartons with reinforced corners and sealing tape. 6. Print shipping marks: name, quantity, gross/net weight, case number, handling signs.

3. How to Calculate Case Dimensions and Weight

Before packing, record the outer length/width/height per carton, pieces per carton and gross weight. Use these to calculate freight (sea freight bills by CBM or weight, whichever is higher) and to estimate container loading (roughly 28CBM for 20GP, 68CBM for 40HQ). KD flat-packing notably increases loading and cuts cost.

4. Arrival Inspection Checklist

1. Check cartons for damage or water stains before opening. 2. Reconcile quantity and models against the packing list. 3. Check metal parts for rust or coating scratches. 4. Check soft surfaces for dents, stains or damage. 5. Verify all parts and hardware are complete. 6. Photograph any damage and file a claim with the carrier promptly.

5. Tip for Buyers

Specify packing requirements (KD or not, wooden case or not, ISPM-15 fumigation certificate or not) in the contract when ordering. With suitable packing and container planning, you can keep both shipping loss and freight under good control.
